The Rio Grande Foundation has expressed concerns over the introduction of Senate Bill 268, which proposes allocating $2.5 million to each of New Mexico's major universities, the University of New Mexico (UNM) and New Mexico State University (NMSU). The foundation argues that substantial funds have already been invested in higher education institutions without significant accountability or measurable benefits for the state's economy.
Senator Maestas, who sponsors the bill, suggests that the funding would come from revenues generated by the oil and gas industry. However, critics argue that these funds are not being returned to taxpayers. "New Mexico’s Legislature is doing NOTHING to return tax dollars to everyday New Mexicans," according to a statement from the Rio Grande Foundation.
Paul Gessing, president of the Rio Grande Foundation, discussed this issue with KOAT Channel 7. He questioned whether using taxpayer money to directly pay athletes at UNM and NMSU is a prudent decision. The foundation advocates for alternative uses of these funds, such as tax cuts or reforms.
The debate continues on how best to utilize state resources for economic growth and taxpayer benefit.
