SANTA FE — The House Judiciary Committee has unanimously approved House Bill 103, a legislative proposal aimed at increasing penalties for battery on peace officers. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her support following the committee's decision.

"Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every single day to keep New Mexicans safe. They deserve to know that we have their backs and won’t tolerate behavior that puts them at risk," said Governor Lujan Grisham in a statement.

The proposed bill seeks to classify aggravated battery on a police officer as a second-degree felony under certain conditions. These include inflicting great bodily harm, using a deadly weapon, or committing the act in a manner likely to cause significant injury or death.

Following its approval by the committee, House Bill 103 will now proceed to the House floor for further consideration.
