The New Mexico Family Action Movement (NM FAM) has expressed its support for the Independent Women’s Forum’s (IWF) press conference scheduled for February 13, which will spotlight Representative Andrea Reeb’s Women’s Sports Act. This announcement was made public through a press release on February 12, 2025.
According to the New Mexico Legislature, House Bill 185, introduced in the 2025 New Mexico Legislative Session, aims to enact the Protection of Women’s Sports Act. The bill seeks to ensure equal athletic opportunities for males and females by mandating separate teams based on biological sex. It prohibits male participation in female-designated sports but allows male athletes as practice players under specific conditions. Additionally, it permits individuals harmed by violations to file private causes of action and offers protections against retaliation for reporting infractions. The bill's objective is to preserve fairness in women’s athletics and uphold Title IX's original intent.
Reeb said, "As a mother of athletes, I know how rewarding sports can be in our children’s lives. It can be a creative outlet, a launching pad to higher education, and an opportunity to create life-long friendships. However, when our female athletes are fearful of their safety, those rewards slip away." She further emphasized that "forcing female athletes to compete against biological males is not only unfair, but it also puts them at risk." Reeb believes this legislation will ensure that young women in New Mexico can continue to compete on a level playing field and pursue their athletic dreams without fear of losing opportunities.
The New Mexico Family Action Movement (NM FAM) focuses on promoting values such as religious freedom, family strength, and the protection of life within New Mexico. According to its website, their mission includes safeguarding life from conception to natural death, supporting the family unit, and defending religious freedoms.
