ABQ Reads is actively seeking volunteers to join its literacy program, which operates in three elementary schools in Albuquerque. The initiative, a collaboration between the Chamber and Albuquerque Public Schools, targets kindergarten and first-grade students at Bel-Air, Atrisco, and Whittier elementaries.

Tutors involved with ABQ Reads meet weekly with students, providing them with at least two books each month. The program not only focuses on improving reading skills but also fosters meaningful relationships between students and tutors throughout the academic year.

APS site coordinators are dedicated to creating engaging lessons and a supportive community environment for both students and tutors. Despite these efforts, the program currently faces a shortage of tutors. Although the number of tutors has increased from 125 in August to 164 in January, there remains a need for more volunteers to reach all eligible students.

Those interested in becoming a tutor can visit ABQReads.com or contact [email protected]. At the end of April, ABQ Reads will host year-end celebrations at each participating school to honor student achievements.

The organization extends gratitude to all tutors, sponsors, and donors who continue to support its mission of enhancing literacy among young learners.
