The New Mexico State Parks Division has proposed the creation of Slot Canyon Riverlands State Park, which would cover 783 acres. This park is planned to be adjacent to a popular outdoor area and will offer access to the slot canyon and Rio Grande. It promises amenities such as camping, trails, wildlife viewing, river recreation, and outdoor education. Additionally, it would connect with the future New Mexico Rio Grande Trail.
Doña Ana County's status as an outdoor destination is expected to benefit from this new addition. The proposal has been met with approval from various sectors including tourism professionals, local businesses, residents, and conservationists.
State Representative Nathan Small commented on the potential benefits: “Slot Canyon Riverlands State Park will boost economic development, improve wildlife habitat, and be a gem for southern New Mexico.”
State Senator Jeff Steinborn expressed enthusiasm for the project: “I’m beyond excited to work towards the creation of this incredible new state park. It’s a place where people can experience breathtaking landscapes and unique wildlife while also boosting our outdoor economy.”
Toby Velasquez from New Mexico State Parks remarked on its significance: “We are excited to take the next step towards the establishment of New Mexico’s 36th state park.”
Rochelle Miller-Hernandez of Visit Las Cruces noted its impact on tourism: “The creation of this exciting new state park would enhance safe access to one of our most popular outdoor hot spots."
Local business owner Ronnie De La O supports the initiative: “As a local business owner near the historic community of Radium Springs, I enthusiastically support the creation of the Slot Canyon Riverlands State Park."
Patrick Nolan from Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks highlighted its environmental value: “The creation of Slot Canyon Riverlands State Park will provide visitors with the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and tranquility of the Rio Grande.”
Beth Bardwell emphasized its scenic location: "Nestled in a canyon, with a breathtaking panorama of Southern New Mexico’s mountain ranges...this new state park will grow to be one of the most loved parks in Doña Ana County."
Located about 20 miles north of Las Cruces at NM 185's eastern flank in Sierra De Las Uvas Mountains, this proposed site includes upland and riverside parcels between Selden Hills and Cedar Hills. The area features diverse habitats such as wetlands and forests noted for birding.
