As New Mexico's legislative session commences, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has expressed her commitment to addressing key challenges in the state. Reflecting on six years of collaboration with the legislature and residents, she outlined her priorities for her remaining term.

Governor Lujan Grisham highlighted significant progress in education, noting the establishment of a constitutional right to childcare, universal pre-K, and free college for residents. She emphasized an ambitious literacy program that increased reading proficiency by 11% over one summer and investments made in teachers and additional classroom days.

The state's economy is also experiencing growth. "Our economy is soaring to new heights," stated Lujan Grisham, citing the creation of 134,000 jobs in four-and-a-half years and rising wages. The governor announced Quantinuum's decision to establish operations in New Mexico as evidence of the state's leadership in quantum computing.

Despite these advancements, public safety remains a pressing concern. The violent crime rate is twice the national average, with numerous repeat offenders being released back into communities. "This is simply unacceptable," said Lujan Grisham. She urged legislative action on reforming criminal competency laws and enhancing penalties for felons using guns or distributing fentanyl.

In child welfare, she proposed full funding for New Mexico’s Children, Youth & Families Department to reduce caseloads and suggested creating an independent Child Protection Authority. Further recommendations included doubling stipends for foster caregivers and exempting them from personal income tax.

Governor Lujan Grisham called on all citizens to engage with legislators during this session: "Share your stories and ideas." Emphasizing cooperation as key to past successes, she concluded by urging collective effort towards safer neighborhoods and opportunities for all residents.

The ongoing 60-day session presents a pivotal opportunity to address these issues head-on.
