New Mexico launches ad campaign to recruit abortion providers from Texas

On August 5, 2024, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a $400,000 advertising campaign aimed at recruiting more abortion providers to the state. The campaign targets Texas, featuring ads in five major newspapers and on six billboards around the Houston Medical Center. The goal is to attract doctors to New Mexico where they will have the "Freedom to Provide" abortion services.

Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico, criticized the use of taxpayer money for this initiative. She said, "Using $400,000 of New Mexicans' hard-earned tax dollars to recruit abortionists to our state is disgraceful."

The New Mexico Department of Health's website promotes Medicaid-funded abortions for undocumented immigrant women, noting that a social security number is not required for these benefits. Tara Shaver continued her criticism by saying that the state's Democrats have created an "abortion free for all," allowing minors, illegal immigrants, and out-of-state residents access to publicly funded abortions.
