The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently taking public comments on Administrator Scott Pruitt's proposal to delay the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for oil and gas methane emissions by two years. This proposal has sparked concern among citizens and environmental groups.

A new analysis reveals that over 203,000 Americans, including more than 51,000 children, reside within half a mile of more than 18,000 oil and gas facilities affected by this proposal. Peer-reviewed studies indicate a significant correlation between proximity to these sites and harmful air pollution as well as negative health effects.

The FracTracker Alliance conducted the analysis using recent Census data alongside a commercial database of oil and gas wells drilled from September 2015 through February 2017. The findings highlight state and county-level populations at risk if the proposed stay is implemented.

As this analysis becomes public, citizens nationwide are testifying at EPA headquarters about the potential harm of blocking the NSPS. These testimonies are being livestreamed for broader access.

Notably, a court recently ruled that Pruitt's previous 90-day administrative stay was illegal. However, no court decision has been made regarding the current two-year regulatory stay proposal.

For further information on those living near affected facilities or to view testimonies, resources are available online through Earthworks' platforms.
