In response to the Public Service Company of New Mexico's (PNM) proposal to eliminate coal from its energy portfolio by 2031, Camilla Feibelman, Director of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter, issued a statement highlighting the economic and environmental implications of this decision.

Feibelman stated, "PNM’s announcement that early retirement of San Juan and Four Corners coal plants will save customers money is a clear demonstration that coal is no longer economically sustainable." She noted that utilities nationwide are planning early retirements for coal plants due to competition from less expensive sources like wind, solar, and energy efficiency.

Feibelman emphasized the need to support workers and communities affected by these changes. She pointed out the potential for clean-energy jobs in the Four Corners area due to its solar capacity and transmission network. This transition requires action from PNM, state and local governments, and other stakeholders.

She criticized past investments in older technologies, such as PNM's 2014 purchase of shares in Arizona’s Palo Verde nuclear plant, which led to increased consumer rates. Feibelman urged PNM to avoid similar investments in aging nuclear facilities.

According to Feibelman, renewable energy options offer cheaper, safer, and cleaner alternatives that benefit families. The closure of San Juan and Four Corners coal plants promises cleaner air and new opportunities for future generations. She called on PNM and New Mexico to invest in job training, cleanup efforts, and renewable energy development in the region.

The Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter represents over 9,000 members in New Mexico and West Texas dedicated to exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet.
