Rep. Yanira Gurrola House District 16 | Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter
A youth-led climate strike is set to take place in Albuquerque on Friday, September 20th. Students from over 20 schools will walk out of their classrooms to protest against what they see as complacency and inaction on climate change. The event aims to call for the urgent implementation of climate action plans at all levels of government.
Thousands are expected to join the strike, which is part of a global movement demanding immediate action on the climate crisis. The youth organizers believe that "the time for reticence has passed," and they are ready to use their collective voice to push for change.
The event will feature a Climate Action Fair with various activities and performances. Notable speakers include Mayor Tim Keller, Senator Antoinette Sedillo Lopez, and community leader Samuel Sage. Performances by DJ Gravity, Freddy Flopez, Wake Self, and others will also take place.
The schedule includes a fair from 12:30-5 pm at Robinson Park, followed by speeches from 1-2:30 pm and a march to the offices of US Senators Heinrich & Udall from 2:30-3:30 pm.
Additional strikes are planned across New Mexico in Santa Fe, Farmington, Las Cruces, and Silver City. More information can be found at www.climatestrikeabq.com or via live streaming at www.facebook.com/350NM/.
The event is sponsored by numerous organizations including 350New Mexico, Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter, Moms Clean Air Force, Citizens Climate Lobby Albuquerque Chapter among others. It also has support from the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.
