New Mexico has a significant opportunity to address emissions in its transportation sector through the VW settlement funds. The Sierra Club has put forward recommendations on how these funds should be utilized. They suggest that the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) invest the full allowable 15 percent of the funding in charging infrastructure to promote electric vehicle (EV) use, particularly in areas lacking sufficient charging stations.
The Sierra Club emphasizes the importance of electrifying transportation fleets, with a focus on acquiring electric school buses and other heavy-duty trucks. This approach aims to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other pollutants effectively.
"The Sierra Club’s overarching aim in going forward with the EMT funded projects is to ensure that New Mexico invests the EMT funds in ways that are forward looking, transformative, and cost-effective over vehicles’ useful lives," stated the organization.
By investing strategically, New Mexico can achieve long-term environmental benefits from this settlement.
