The Biden Administration is set to announce a pause on new oil and gas leasing on public lands and waters, as part of its climate action strategy. This initiative includes a review of existing leases and permits, along with efforts to boost offshore wind renewable-energy development. The order builds upon an existing 60-day halt on fossil-fuel development, which also examines the federal coal-leasing program.
In addition to these measures, the order instructs agencies to eliminate fossil-fuel subsidies and seek new opportunities for clean energy advancement. A task force will be established to coordinate investments and provide support for communities that are heavily reliant on fossil fuels during the economic transition. This includes transforming inactive fossil-fuel sites into economic hubs, which is seen as vital for addressing New Mexico's dependency on oil and gas.
Camilla Feibelman, director of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter, commented on the announcement:
Athan Manuel, director of Public Lands Protection, also issued a statement in response to the news.
