Sen. Linda Lopez Senate District 11 | Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter
President Biden's recent decision to ban Russian oil imports has sparked reactions from various groups, including the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter. The organization expressed concerns about the reliance on oil and gas, stating that these resources are used as "weapons" by Russian oligarchs and criminals. They argue that this dependence poses a threat to national security.
The statement emphasized the need to transition to clean energy sources like wind and solar, which do not contribute to wars or violence. The Sierra Club criticized U.S. fossil-fuel corporations for profiting from the situation in Ukraine, highlighting environmental pollution as another significant issue.
"We applaud President Biden’s strength and wisdom in banning Russian oil imports," the statement read. It also noted that an economy reliant on fossil fuels is vulnerable to "authoritarian aggression," with energy prices influenced by leaders like Putin.
The Sierra Club pointed out financial burdens such as abandoned wells in New Mexico, costing taxpayers $8 billion. They called for accountability from the industry and advocated for a shift towards renewable energy for improved health, economy, and safety.
"New Mexico simply cannot afford its reliance on oil and gas extraction anymore," they stated, urging the state to lead in creating a sustainable future with renewable energy.
