The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) has proposed a budget aimed at improving services for seniors and disabled adults in the state. ALTSD Cabinet Secretary Designate Emily Kaltenbach emphasized the significance of this proposal, stating, "This budget proposal is a commitment to elevating the quality of life for older adults and individuals with disabilities across New Mexico."

Key initiatives outlined in the budget include expanding direct services through the aging network. The plan allocates $3.1 million to strengthen these services, including a specific $155,000 investment for elders from tribes, pueblos, and nations. Additionally, there is a $400,000 federal match intended for the AmeriCorps Volunteer Program that supports tribal elders.

The proposal also focuses on re-activating and expanding long-term care with an allocation of $6.5 million and an additional $1 million dedicated to re-activating the Long-Term Care Division. This funding aims to expand infrastructure, increase staffing capacity, streamline service delivery, reduce wait times, and prepare for New Mexico's growing aging population.

Furthermore, consumer and elder rights services are set to receive increased support with an additional $1.2 million in funding. This includes $892,200 earmarked for 10 full-time positions and $300,000 designated for the Aging and Disability Resource Center call center.

Without these resources, ALTSD anticipates challenges in meeting the increasing needs of New Mexico’s aging population. The enhanced funding is expected to address service gaps, reduce delays, and provide comprehensive support for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Kaltenbach stressed the importance of investing in these services: "Investing in these services is critical for fostering independence, dignity, and a better quality of life for New Mexico’s older and disabled adults." She urged lawmakers to back this budget proposal to ensure that residents receive necessary care and resources.

In conclusion of her remarks on this matter Kaltenbach stated: "Every dollar invested today contributes to a brighter and more secure future for our elders," urging legislative support to make a lasting impact on vulnerable communities' lives.
