The 2024 General Election in New Mexico saw significant involvement from the REALTORS® Political Action Committee of New Mexico (RPAC-NM), which supported 100 candidates across the state. This election was notable as all 112 seats in the state legislature were contested on November 5th.
RPAC-NM contributed $105,750 to the campaigns, with a near-even split between Democratic and Republican candidates, reflecting their commitment to prioritizing policy over politics. Of those backed by RPAC-NM, 97 candidates won their races, achieving a success rate of 97%.
Eight REALTOR® Party candidates ran for office; five were elected to the Legislature—four in the House and one in the Senate. Cathy Colvin, RPAC-NM Chair for 2024, stated: “We are proud to support candidates who prioritize policies that enhance housing, economic growth, and the well-being of communities across our state.”
In broader election results, Democrats maintained control of both legislative chambers. In the House of Representatives, they held onto 44 seats compared to Republicans' 26. A key race in District 38 saw Rebecca Dow (R) reclaim her seat from incumbent Tara Jaramillo (D). The Senate remained under Democratic control with a stable majority.
Women now hold a historic majority in New Mexico's Legislature with an increase of female representatives reaching 60 out of 112 seats.
At the federal level, incumbents retained their positions. U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D) won re-election against Nella Domenici (R). In congressional districts, Melanie Ann Stansbury (D), Gabe Vasquez (D), and Teresa Leger Fernandez (D) each secured victories over their Republican challengers.
The election also featured one automatic recount in House District 57 due to close vote margins between Catherine Jeanette Cullen (R) and Michelle Eleanor Sandoval (D).
As final results await certification and any necessary recounts are conducted, New Mexicans anticipate a legislative term focused on collaboration and progress.
Leadership roles for the upcoming legislative session have been determined with Representative Javier Martinez selected as Speaker of the House among other appointments within both parties' caucuses.
