The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) is organizing the 19th Annual Government-to-Government Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation. This event allows Tribal leaders to engage directly with the federal government on critical issues affecting their communities, such as enhancing safety for American Indian and Alaskan Native women and strengthening the federal response to crimes like domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking.
Governor Roybal of Pueblo of Pojoaque emphasized the importance of this consultation: “As the only female tribal Governor in New Mexico, it is my responsibility to ensure that the voices of Native women are heard and prioritized in all spaces where decisions about our communities are being made.” She highlighted the need for support and funding to create safe spaces for Native women.
Governor Chavarria of Santa Clara Pueblo also underscored the significance of tribal leadership's involvement: “Native women, men, and children living in Pueblo and Indian Country face almost daily challenges to their physical safety and mental well-being.” He pointed out jurisdictional barriers that hinder access to public safety services on tribal lands.
CSVANW Executive Director Tiffany Jiron stated, “It is essential that the experiences and priorities of our Tribal leaders are front and center at this consultation.” CSVANW supports ensuring that Tribal leaders' recommendations influence federal responses.
Governors Chavarria, Roybal, and Lieutenant Governor Abeita will share their insights on improving federal programs to meet community needs. They will also discuss successful local initiatives addressing gender-based violence.
CSVANW advocates for continued dialogue between Tribal leaders and the federal government to strengthen partnerships addressing systemic issues contributing to violence in Native communities. This consultation represents a step towards fulfilling federal trust responsibilities to Native Americans.
