On October 11, 2024, the Medical Assistance Division of New Mexico's Health Care Authority Department released a supplemental briefing. This document informed healthcare providers in New Mexico that they will receive state funds to support "gender-affirming care." This development stems from House Bill 7 passed in 2023, which Senate Republicans unanimously opposed. The bill was approved in the Senate with a vote of 23-15.

Senate Republican Leader, Senator Greg Baca (R-Belen), expressed his concerns regarding this decision. He stated: “It is unthinkable, yet inevitable that the passage of HB 7 would force the use of taxpayer dollars to provide gender-affirming care for children as young as 12. This is the result of a pervasive left-wing ideology that has overrun Santa Fe. We have repeatedly lost grounded legislators who stood on their values and for their constituencies. Instead, radical Democrats push out voices of reason and install progressives intent on squashing the voice of the traditional New Mexican. Unfortunately, our children will bear the consequences of the Democrat’s willingness to compromise on New Mexico values.”

The implementation of House Bill 7 continues to be a contentious issue within New Mexico's political landscape.
