Equality New Mexico (EQNM) has issued a statement addressing the controversy surrounding its recent messaging related to the 2024 election for House District 18. The organization has received feedback from individuals who have expressed concerns about EQNM's stance, particularly regarding text messages sent out that contrasted candidates running for the district.

House District 18 holds significant importance in New Mexico's LGBTQ history and will soon be vacated by Rep. Gail Chasey, a long-time supporter of LGBTQ rights. EQNM quickly endorsed Marianna Anaya, citing her history of advocating for LGBTQ communities as a key reason for their support.

The organization's text messages described one candidate, Dr. Anjali Taneja, as being "deeply involved with the corporate medical establishment." EQNM acknowledged that this characterization felt like an attack to some and apologized for oversimplifying their message. They emphasized that their intention was to highlight Dr. Taneja's connections with donors they believe are interested in protecting corporate medicine.

Dr. Taneja is recognized as a board-certified family physician with nearly two decades of experience providing healthcare to low-income patients and gender-affirming care for trans and non-binary individuals in New Mexico.

EQNM stated, "We don’t know whether these corporate donations and support will impact Dr. Taneja’s votes if she wins, but the voters in HD18 deserve to know about the connections."

The race features four Democratic primary candidates: Marianna Anaya, Dr. Anjali Taneja, Gloria Doherty, and Juan Larranaga. EQNM endorsed Anaya before the filing deadline due to her long-standing work supporting LGBTQ people.

EQNM also addressed distinctions made by supporters of other candidates concerning Anaya's role in reforming the Medical Malpractice Law in New Mexico, which they argue benefited patients over corporate interests.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Marianna Anaya based on her track record and values while pledging not to attack or draw distinctions about other candidates moving forward.

"Let’s be clear; we endorsed Marianna Anaya, a Queer woman of color who has worked tirelessly for the causes and community-driven, values-based organizations like EQNM," stated Equality New Mexico.

The statement concluded by emphasizing the critical nature of this election for LGBTQ liberation in New Mexico and expressing gratitude towards Dr. Taneja's contributions to healthcare access while acknowledging challenges posed by corporate healthcare industries.
