As the 2024 legislative session nears its conclusion, discussions on crime bills have slowed amid doubts about their effectiveness. However, movement is still expected on gun safety measures. The session will continue until Thursday, February 15 at noon, with daily committee floor sessions anticipated.

Key agenda items supported by various organizations remain in focus. Supporters are encouraged to advocate for the affirmative consent and Paid Family Leave bills. A petition supporting HB151, The Benjamin Higher Education Sexual Violence Prevention Act, is currently available for signatures.

The EQNM team is actively involved in legislative activities. Executive Director Marshall Martinez was joined by Nathan Saavedra and Michelle Najera in Santa Fe to support community efforts.

Haley Lynn's TikTok coverage of the session continues to provide updates as it progresses.

The Affirmative Consent bill has passed the Senate Education Committee unanimously and now awaits consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Advocates are urged to make their voices heard by signing EQNM’s petition.

Paid Family Medical Leave remains under discussion and recently passed the Senate.

Conversely, the Dignity Not Detention bill did not pass on the Senate floor. This bill aimed to prevent state contracts with ICE for housing immigrants in local facilities that lack significant federal regulation and have been criticized for abuses. Voters are encouraged to review how their representatives voted on this matter ahead of future elections.

In these final days of the session, meetings and news updates will be frequent as legislators deliberate over community protection from gun violence among other issues. Updates can be followed on Twitter/X or through a forthcoming wrap-up post next week after supporters sign the petition for HB151.
