Albuquerque Reads, a program under the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, relies on volunteer tutors to help young students develop reading and writing skills. Michelle Donaldson, ABQ Reads chairwoman, GACC Board member, and KOB-TV general manager, emphasized the program's impact.

"The power of one-on-one tutoring is what makes Albuquerque Reads so effective. By moving kids up in reading level, a wider world of learning is opened to them," Donaldson said. "Albuquerque Reads is a chance for volunteers to make an immediate impact on Day One. Giving a child the confidence and joy of reading is a life-long gift. It changes the educational opportunities and outcomes in a substantial way."

Donaldson discussed ABQ Reads during an appearance on KKOB News Radio with Bob Clark last week. She highlighted the need for new volunteers to join the long-standing initiative.

Tutors can volunteer at any of three Albuquerque Public Schools' Title I schools: Atrisco, Bel Air, and Whittier elementaries. They donate 90 minutes per week or can choose to volunteer one week each month as part of a team.

APS provides training for volunteers before they begin one-on-one tutoring and offers guidance throughout the school year. ABQ Reads tutor training sessions will be held from September 4-12 but are also available throughout the year.
