The City of Albuquerque is advancing a project championed by the late Westside City Councilor Ken Sanchez that has been discussed for years but has yet to come to fruition. Building a new, modern indoor sports facility is a venture that would both benefit local families and bring a positive long-term economic impact to the region.
Today, a plan to build such a center on Albuquerque’s Westside is gaining momentum with Mayor Tim Keller and Councilor Louie Sanchez leading the charge.
“Like a lot of Albuquerque families, our kids play sports, and every year it gets clearer that there aren’t enough places to play,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “A new complex, especially one that could host tournaments, would be a huge asset for our city. It’s time for us to make this dream a reality.”
“This project has long been the vision of our beloved late City Councilor Ken Sanchez,” said City Councilor Louie Sanchez. “His foresight got this project in motion years ago and I am honored to work with the community and the Mayor to help get it over the finish line.”
A viable location has been identified by the city between Coors Blvd and Atrisco NW, south of St. Josephs NW, for an indoor sports facility that would serve local youth and families as both a practice and competition venue. The facility could also host local and regional tournaments and accommodate various sports including basketball, volleyball, wrestling, cheer, dance, and indoor soccer along with other activities. The site is close to I-40, has great access from all directions in the city, and is already approved for development.
