Mayor Tim Keller, City of Albuquerque | City of Albuquerque

The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department (AWD) Eastside and Westside shelters will be closed on Thursday, July 4, except for admissions and reclaims, which will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Most reclaims can be processed on this day, many free of charge. Credit cards will not be accepted for reclaims on this day. Appointments are not required to reclaim pets. The shelters will resume normal operations on Friday, July 5.

Lucky Paw Adoption Center located at Coronado Center, 6600 Menaul NE will be open to the public on Thursday, July 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

AWD is asking people who find healthy pets for their assistance, as the city shelter is currently quite full. AWD asks that you maintain custody of the pet and look for its owner, as allowed per the HEART Ordinance:

"Stray finders should have the pet scanned for a microchip at either a veterinary clinic or any of AWD’s two shelter locations (no appointment is necessary)."

"AWD has 34 pet microchipping scanner locations around the city."

"Stray finders must report the found pet to Animal Welfare by calling 311."

"Stray finders can ask neighbors and post flyers where the pet was found."

"Stray finders should visit petfinder.com, Pawboost and 24PetConnect to post information about the pet they have found."

"Finders are also encouraged to post information on other social media outlets such as Facebook, NextDoor, Craigslist, etc."

For those looking for lost pets, AWD advises visiting their website along with Pawboost and other social media outlets for found pets.
