National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week is currently underway in Albuquerque, shining a light on the vital work carried out by the City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department Animal Protection Services Division. The week serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the services provided to the community.

The role of an Animal Protection Services Officer (APSO) is often misunderstood, with some mistakenly labeling it as simply being a "dog catcher." However, APSOs play a crucial role in ensuring public and animal safety by enforcing the City's Humane and Ethical Animal Rules and Treatment (HEART) ordinance. They also educate pet owners on responsible pet care, handle impoundments, quarantines, and investigations related to animal cruelty, abandonment, and nuisances.

In 2023, the Animal Protection Division responded to over 25,000 calls, rescues, and other community activities. Captain of the Animal Welfare Department, David Rose, emphasized the dedication and love for animals required in the daily work of an APSO, stating, "Each day that an Animal Protection Officer puts on their uniform they never know what they will face. It takes dedication and a real love of animals to do the job of an APSO."

Director of the Animal Welfare Department, Carolyn Ortega, highlighted the department's mission to protect and serve both the pets and people of Albuquerque. She commended the Animal Protection Services officers for their essential role in upholding the HEART ordinance and ensuring the safety of the city. Ortega stated, “AWD’s Animal Protection Services officers are in our communities doing this every day. They are an arm of public safety, that has been overlooked and underappreciated; although, they play a crucial role in keeping our city safe by enforcing our HEART ordinance."

The community is encouraged to join in expressing gratitude towards the Animal Protection Services Division of the Animal Welfare Department. Citizens are urged to show appreciation to these dedicated officers for their hard work, commitment to saving animal lives, and their efforts in maintaining public safety in Albuquerque.
