The largest esports tournament in New Mexico, the NM State Esports Invitational, is set to take place at New Mexico State University on April 6 and 7. According to Ryan May, NMSU esports liaison, this event is a significant one for the state as it gathers the largest number of esports competitors. May stated, "The invitational is the only event of its kind in New Mexico."

Over 500 middle school, high school, and university students will participate in the tournament, competing in popular titles such as “League of Legends,” “Mario Kart 8,” “Rocket League,” “Splatoon 3,” “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” and “Valorant.” May highlighted the importance of this in-person gaming experience, mentioning that "students never get exposed to the thrill of competing in person."

Esports, being one of the fastest-growing industries globally, has seen a significant rise in high school esports programs in New Mexico. There are now 90 programs across the state, with Las Cruces Public Schools investing over $1 million in developing esports in public schools. May expressed, "Gaming is one of the most inclusive activities and has connected millions of individuals worldwide."

The NM State Esports Invitational is not only a platform for students to compete but also serves as a recruitment opportunity for New Mexico State University. May shared a testimonial from a parent who attended last year's event, stating, "My son is about to finish his senior year in high school. Because of this event, not only is he excited to attend college, but he’s set on going to NMSU!”

The community is invited to attend the free event, where vendors, food trucks, and various gaming opportunities will be available. For further details about the tournament, interested individuals can visit esports.nmsu.edu.
