Santa Fe, NM – The New Mexico Museum of Art is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibition, "Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000," at the Vladem Contemporary. The showcase, running from June 8, 2024, to May 4, 2025, will take visitors on a journey through the state's artistic evolution over three transformative decades.

"With more than 125 visionaries contributing to the tapestry of this exhibition, Off-Center weaves together a diverse array of artistic expressions, each reflecting the spirit of its time," shared Christian Waguespack, Head of Curatorial Affairs at NMMOA.

The exhibition will delve into the artistic identity of New Mexico, showcasing the magnetic pull that attracted artists from various corners of the world to the enchanting state. It will highlight not only well-known artistic hubs like Albuquerque and Taos but also lesser-known communities like Galisteo, Silver City, Las Cruces, and others that played significant roles in shaping the state's artistic narrative.

"Off-Center stands as a tribute to the state’s unwavering commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage," remarked Dr. Mark White, Executive Director of NMMOA. "From its beginnings in 1978 to its present day, the Department has been a beacon of creativity, nurturing the artistic soul of New Mexico for generations to come."

The exhibition is divided into thematic groups of Place, Spectacle, and Identity, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a journey that transcends boundaries and celebrates the rich tapestry of human experience. To ensure a comprehensive exploration of the era, the exhibition will undergo five partial rotations throughout the year, capturing a wide range of influential artists and thematic breadth.

In addition to the artworks on display, Off-Center is complemented by an oral history project featuring video interviews with many of the living artists showcased in the exhibition. These interviews will offer insight into the creative processes and inspirations behind the artworks, enriching the viewer's understanding of the pieces on view.

The New Mexico Museum of Art, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, aims to create authentic experiences that deepen the public's understanding and enjoyment of art. With a collection exceeding 20,000 pieces, the museum serves as a bridge bringing global art to New Mexico and local art to the world.

As the exhibition opens its doors at the Vladem Contemporary, art enthusiasts and cultural aficionados alike can look forward to immersing themselves in the vibrant and diverse artistic landscape that defined New Mexico from 1970 to 2000.
