NMSU Board of Regents has selected Mónica Torres, chancellor of NMSU system community colleges, as the next interim president of the NMSU system. Torres will take over the position from current Interim President Jay Gogue on May 1. Regents Chair Ammu Devasthali expressed confidence in Torres, stating, “Dr. Torres is an accomplished and visionary leader with a deep commitment to student success and a wealth of institutional knowledge of the NMSU system.”

Devasthali also acknowledged Gogue's service, thanking him for his leadership over the past year and noting that he will continue in his role until May 10 to facilitate a smooth transition. Torres, who previously served as the president of Doña Ana Community College and oversaw all of NMSU's community colleges, expressed her dedication to the university system, saying, "I am committed to the land-grant mission and to our status as an HSI and an MSI."

The board has initiated a new search for the next permanent president, with Devasthali leading the search committee. The committee, which includes a diverse group of members such as faculty, students, and community leaders, aims to select a new president by the end of the year. Devasthali emphasized the importance of a swift process, stating, "We intend to move quickly with this process."

As the search for the new president commences, the board will provide updates on the progress. Those interested in following the NMSU presidential search can visit nmsu.edu/president-search for more information.
