UNM Lifeguard Training: Putting Patient Safety First

The University of New Mexico Hospital Lifeguard Team prioritizes patient safety through quarterly training simulations that prepare them for unexpected and high-pressure situations. Amy Armbruster, an RN, CCRN, CFRN, NRP, FPC, who serves as a flight nurse and educator for UNM Hospital Lifeguard, highlighted the unique nature of their training, stating, "No other team, no other nurse, medic or flight physician is going to get this training anywhere else."

During a recent training session, Armbruster described a scenario as a "pediatric mass casualty event," where first responders had to triage patients based on the severity of their injuries. Participants quickly assessed and treated patients, focusing on providing the appropriate care in a limited timeframe. Armbruster emphasized the importance of acting swiftly and accurately in such critical situations, highlighting the rigorous preparation that goes into each training session.

One trainee shared the challenges of dealing with pediatric patients in traumatic situations, noting the complexities of diagnosing and prioritizing care for children who may be scared or in shock. Armbruster acknowledged the difficulties faced in such scenarios, underscoring the necessity of thorough training due to the frequency of emergency events, particularly in regions with high accident rates.

Armbruster emphasized the significance of the Lifeguard Team's top-notch training and advanced equipment in ensuring the best possible care for patients. She reassured the public, especially parents, by stating, "I can tell you that you know 100 percent, we will treat your child like they are our own, and you can rest assured that they are in the best hands possible."

The Lifeguard Team's commitment to excellence and continuous training reflects their dedication to providing exceptional care during emergencies. Their comprehensive approach to preparedness and response underscores their unwavering focus on putting patient safety first.
