Huiping Cao, a professor in the Department of Computer Science at New Mexico State University, shared her journey and passion for academia. Cao, who joined NMSU in 2010, focuses her research on data mining, applied machine learning, and data engineering.

Reflecting on her role, Cao expressed, "I take immense pride in the accomplishments of the students I have guided through their academic journeys." She highlighted her success in graduating four Ph.D. candidates and the close relationships she developed with each student, nurturing their growth and celebrating their achievements firsthand.

Driven by a childhood dream of becoming a scientist, Cao emphasized her dedication to research and education. She mentioned, "NMSU offers me an opportunity to do what I desire to do for my career life," praising the university's emphasis on both research and teaching within the computer science department.

Having earned her Ph.D. at the University of Hong Kong and completed a post-doctoral position at Arizona State University, Cao holds the prestigious Hue and Pat McCoy Endowed Professorship in the Department of Computer Science at NMSU. She expressed, "I find great fulfillment in the academic freedom afforded to us to pursue scientific inquiry," highlighting the value she places on the connections she has built with her students.

Cao's dedication to guiding students and imparting knowledge was evident as she shared, "Over the years, I have provided direct research guidance to numerous students and imparted knowledge to hundreds of students." She emphasized the significance of receiving heartfelt emails from former students, expressing gratitude for her support long after their graduation, as reminders of the impact she has made.

As Huiping Cao continues her academic journey at NMSU, her commitment to research, education, and fostering student success remains a cornerstone of her career in the Department of Computer Science.
