Local journalism in New Mexico is expanding with the introduction of Press Forward New Mexico, a new chapter that aims to revitalize and support the local news ecosystem in the state. The initiative, co-led by the Thornburg Foundation and the New Mexico Local News Fund at UNM, is part of a larger $500 million effort to boost local news across the U.S.
Rashad Mahmood, Executive Director of the Local News Fund, expressed optimism about the impact of Press Forward in New Mexico, stating, “Bringing Press Forward to New Mexico will be transformative to our local news ecosystem.” He highlighted the importance of collaboration with top foundations to support underserved communities in accessing essential news and information.
Allan Oliver, Executive Director of the Thornburg Foundation, emphasized the significance of local journalism in informing the public, increasing government accountability, and strengthening democracy. He stated, “We are excited to participate in a coalition of New Mexico funders in Press Forward, which will help bring national investment and help strengthen trusted news in communities around our state.”
Gwyneth Doland, C&J Professor of Practice at UNM, expressed confidence in the joint fundraising efforts, stating, “With Press Forward’s help I know we can do even more.” Doland highlighted the importance of partnerships like the one between UNM and the New Mexico Local News Fund in strengthening the state’s news ecosystem.
Press Forward New Mexico aims to raise $3 million over five years, with matching funds from the national Press Forward team. The initiative will provide support to independent news outlets serving New Mexico’s diverse communities, with philanthropic partners including the Albuquerque Community Foundation, Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, and others.
Dale R. Anglin, Press Forward Director, emphasized the crucial role of local leaders in rebuilding America’s local news landscape, stating, “Press Forward Locals are critical to our success.” Press Forward New Mexico will also have access to additional resources such as Catalyst Funds and tech assistance to accelerate their work and address longstanding inequities in coverage and practice.
The expansion of local journalism in New Mexico, spearheaded by UNM and its partners, marks a significant step towards strengthening the state’s news ecosystem and supporting the next generation of journalists.
