Five Sandia Labs Scientists Honored with 2024 Black Engineer of the Year Awards

Five Sandia National Laboratories engineers have been honored with the 2024 Black Engineer of the Year Awards for their outstanding achievements in engineering, science, and technology. The recipients were recognized for their significant contributions in creative, innovative, and science-based systems engineering solutions to address some of the nation's most challenging national security issues.

Michelle Collins, awarded the Science Spectrum Trailblazer, shared that her journey to becoming an engineer began in seventh grade when she was constructing a doorbell. She emphasized the importance of mentoring and recruiting future generations of scientists and engineers.

Anthony Sanders, who received the same award, was drawn to engineering through his love of music. He now works as Sandia's Campus Partnership manager, fostering relationships between the Labs and educational institutions while providing support to underrepresented youth.

Sean Harris, named the Modern Day Technology Leader, discovered his interest in information technology while working at Best Buy in high school. Harris is currently serving as the deputy director of the Field Intelligence Element at Sandia and has been instrumental in leading cybersecurity efforts.

Nicole Jackson, recognized as the Most Promising Engineer in Industry, credits her early exposure to the arts for helping her find new solutions in her work at Sandia. She is dedicated to making the civil engineering field more diverse and inclusive through mentorship and support of STEM students.

Rigo Tibi, honored as the Senior Investigator, has made significant contributions to improving monitoring of underground nuclear explosions during his time at Sandia. Tibi is also actively involved in encouraging students from minority communities to pursue careers at national laboratories.

The Black Engineer of the Year Awards, presented by the national Career Communications Group, highlight the achievements of the nation's top engineers, scientists, and technology experts. The recipients from Sandia National Laboratories have demonstrated excellence in their respective fields and are paving the way for future generations of diverse talent in the engineering and technology sectors.
