The University of New Mexico is set to host the annual meeting of the Western Positive Psychology Association (WPPA) on March 22-23, bringing together individuals interested in the science of happiness and positive psychology. According to Department of Psychology Associate Professor Bruce Smith, positive psychology focuses on fostering resilience, mindfulness, love, kindness, gratitude, hope, meaning, and purpose in people's lives. Smith, who has been teaching this subject for 19 years at UNM, highlighted the importance of the field in enabling individuals to live their lives to the fullest.
Despite the conference being traditionally held in southern California, UNM was chosen to host this year's event post-COVID due to its track record of enthusiastic participation. Smith expressed his excitement, stating, "Even though we are far from where it all started, the WPPA leaders were so impressed with our consistently large group of enthusiastic participants in the past, they asked us to hold this first post-pandemic face-to-face meeting here right here at UNM."
The conference, sponsored by the Department of Psychology and supported by donations from various organizations, is significant for Smith, who co-founded the Center for Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP) and helped develop the theme 'Moving from surviving to thriving'. The event is expected to draw hundreds of attendees, with a focus on transitioning towards a more positive and fulfilling life.
Professor Emeritus Bill Miller, a distinguished speaker at the conference, emphasized the shift in psychology towards focusing on what is right with people, rather than what is wrong. Miller, a pioneer in motivational interviewing and the founder of positive change initiatives, will be sharing insights on hope and ways to cultivate it in individuals' lives.
The conference will feature renowned speakers such as Sonja Lyubomirsky and Stewart Donaldson, who will delve into topics related to increasing happiness and the future of positive psychology. Attendees can expect a range of presentations aimed at enhancing happiness, success, and well-being in various aspects of life.
The event, scheduled to kick off on Friday evening, March 22 and continue throughout Saturday, March 23 at the UNM Student Union Building, will also offer workshops by presenters on Sunday, March 24. Registration for the conference, starting at $75 for students, includes meals provided by UNM catering. Participants can find more information on WPPA, registration, and the conference itinerary on the organization's website.
