Marilyn Baumgardner, a senior medical records clerk in the Health Information Management (HIM) Department at UNM Hospital, has reached a remarkable milestone by celebrating 55 years of service at the institution. Baumgardner was honored at the hospital's annual anniversary and retirement banquet, where she was recognized as the longest-serving employee in UNM Hospital's history.
Expressing her love for her job, Baumgardner stated, "I love my job, and I am proud that I am still able to work and do the best that I can." She attributes her long tenure to the supportive work environment and the meaningful relationships she has built with her colleagues over the years.
Rebecca Tafoya, an HIM coding educator who has worked alongside Baumgardner for over 38 years, praised her dedication and work ethic, describing her as a great co-worker and friend who goes above and beyond in her role. Baumgardner's positive attitude and commitment to excellence have made her a beloved figure among her peers.
Baumgardner's career at UNM Hospital began in 1968 at the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital, where she served as a clerk in the outpatient department. Over the years, she has witnessed the hospital's evolution into the Bernalillo County Medical Center and eventually The University of New Mexico Hospital. Despite the organization's numerous changes, Baumgardner has remained a constant source of support and stability for her team members.
Reflecting on her decades-long tenure, Baumgardner shared words of wisdom for younger employees, encouraging them to do their best work and remain resilient in the face of challenges. In addition to her full-time role in HIM, Baumgardner stays active in the world of New Mexico sports, working part-time at various athletic events throughout the year.
Outside of work, Baumgardner enjoys spending time with her family, including four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her dedication and passion for her job have made her an invaluable asset to UNM Hospital, with colleagues describing her as an inspiration and a role model for others to emulate.
