Applications are now open for the 2024 Women in STEM Awards at the University of New Mexico. The awards, now in their ninth year, are a collaborative effort between Advance at UNM, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Vice President for Research.

"We know that Women in STEM awardees from the past eight years have gone on to do some amazing research on a range of topics," said Advance Director Julia Fulghum. "We are eager to see the proposals of this year’s applicants and encourage submissions from across campus. Please contact us if you want to know if your idea qualifies."

The awards offer grants ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 in three categories: travel awards, seed awards, and workshop awards. These grants aim to support collaborations, stimulate research projects for external funding, and generate innovative research ideas and collaborations.

The funding for these awards comes from an anonymous gift made in 2015 to UNM, specifically to support research by and professorships for women faculty in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The income from this gift is utilized to assist UNM women tenure-track and tenured assistant and associate STEM professors in establishing new lines of research and developing collaborations.

Eligible applicants for the awards include tenure-track and tenured faculty members at UNM who hold the rank of assistant or associate professor and are pursuing research in areas supported by funding agencies like the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, or the Department of Energy.

Proposals for the awards must be submitted by May 14, 2024, through UNM’s InfoReady system, with decisions to be announced by June 26. The award period will run from August 12, 2024, through December 15, 2025.

For the third year, additional funding is available to support proposals in priority research areas, including climate change/alternate energy solutions, resilience, and next-generation computational research.

To date, 69 women at UNM have received Women in STEM Award funding. Profiles of previous winners and their work can be found on the university's website.
