New Tools Help UNM Physician Assistant Expand Street Medicine Services

Lindsay Fox, MSPAS, PA-C, a physician assistant at The University of New Mexico, is leading the charge in bringing medical care directly to those in need through street medicine. Fox, who works within UNM's Department of Internal Medicine, highlighted the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness or transitional housing in accessing traditional healthcare services. She emphasized the importance of bringing medical care to them, stating, "Rather than forego medical care, we bring it to them."

To enhance her street medicine services, Fox now has a new truck equipped with storage containers to carry all necessary supplies. The truck was recently showcased at a news conference by the City of Albuquerque, where officials discussed efforts to support community members experiencing homelessness. Fox's collaboration with Albuquerque Community Safety has made a significant impact on numerous individuals who struggle to seek medical care independently.

Fox explained the significance of providing on-the-spot medical care, stating, "Having people show up for appointments can be really burdensome... It can be the difference between losing all of your possessions and getting health care." She expressed her commitment to ensuring individuals receive the care they need while maintaining a sense of trust and compassion within the community.

The truck's supplies include a complete wound care kit, essential for treating various conditions commonly seen on the streets. Additionally, the drawers are stocked with items like clothes, socks, hand warmers, cough drops, and even dog bones. Fox emphasized the importance of self-care to her patients, encouraging them to prioritize their well-being.

While Fox aims to provide care where individuals are situated, she acknowledges the need to refer more severe cases to hospitals when necessary. She emphasized the importance of building trust and fostering a humane and empathetic approach in delivering services to those in need.

The article provides insight into a typical street medicine interaction led by Fox, showcasing her dedication and commitment to providing essential healthcare services to vulnerable populations.
