Dancers and musicians from New Mexico State University, along with local performers, are gearing up for "Reignite: A Dance Concert," hosted by the NMSU Dance program from March 1-3.
The concert will feature a diverse range of choreographies, including contemporary, hip-hop, flamenco, tap, and Latin ballroom, showcasing the talents of NMSU dance majors and minors. Choreographers for the event include NMSU dance faculty members Applehelen Kirby, Ana Suffle, George Torres Jr., and Ryan McMullen, who is also the director of the NMSU Dance program.
NMSU dance students Amelia Dunn and Graven Babe earned a spot in the performance after their choreographic proposals were selected following a rigorous scoring process. Dunn expressed her excitement by stating, “After working tirelessly on our respective creative projects, it’s a great opportunity to share our choreography on a broader scale,” while Babe highlighted the uniqueness of each dance, saying, “It’s a really eclectic set of styles, each dance is unique to the choreographer's movement preference in a really beautiful way.”
The event will also feature special guests such as NMSU’s Ballet Folklorico and Mariachi Band, NMSU alumni, the Dark Circles Contemporary Dance Company of Las Cruces, and members of the El Paso Community College Dance Company, showcasing a variety of dance styles.
Ryan McMullen emphasized the importance of showcasing diverse dance styles, stating, “Our new show, ‘Reignite,’ features dances like the tango, salsa, flamenco, and Mexican folklorico forms, in addition to more common dance styles in America like contemporary, tap, and hip-hop forms.” He added that this diversity allows students to expand their repertoire and create a performance that appeals to audiences of all demographics.
The performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on March 1 and 2, and 2 p.m. on March 3 at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts. Tickets are priced at $15 for general admission and $10 for students.
