University of New Mexico alumna Emma Hotz has been named a Luce Scholar, the first student from UNM to receive this prestigious honor. The Luce Scholars Program, established by the Henry Luce Foundation, aims to deepen understanding of Asia among American leaders by providing stipends, language training, and professional placements in Asia for selected scholars each year.
Expressing her gratitude, Hotz stated, "I am truly humbled to be named a Luce Scholar and to represent the University of New Mexico and the State of New Mexico! Being the first UNM student to have received this award truly makes this achievement go far beyond myself."
Hotz, known for her impactful contributions during her time at UNM, played a key role in establishing the Asian American Pacific Islander Resource Center (AAPIRC) and creating the ASUNM Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion position. Her efforts have continued to benefit the AAPI community and UNM students.
President of Faculty Senate and English Professor Finnie Coleman commended Hotz, saying, "Emma was a shining star on our campus – a true leader – our best and brightest. She richly deserves this honor. The entire UNM family should celebrate her success."
Hotz's work during the COVID-19 pandemic, including assisting in the creation of the ASUNM Emergency Scholarship Fund and her involvement in Protect NM, culminated in her undergraduate thesis on how COVID-19 fueled anti-Asian hate through media exposure.
In response to her achievement, Hotz expressed hope for inspiring more New Mexicans and future leaders, especially women of color and the AAPI community, to pursue opportunities like the Luce Scholars Program.
Despite her upcoming year in Asia as a Luce Scholar, Hotz plans to return to New Mexico to continue advocating against inequities in her state and to further empower the Asian-American community.
Reflecting on her future endeavors, Hotz stated, "I am excited for my Luce Year and the opportunity to spend time in Asia to pursue social justice and creative work. This experience will continue to grow my global understanding and provide the opportunity to reconnect to my culture."
