Powerful Voices: UNM Nursing Students Engage in Legislative Session

Nursing students from The University of New Mexico College of Nursing recently had the unique opportunity to participate in the 2024 State Legislative Session in Santa Fe, gaining valuable insights into the intersection of nursing and policymaking.

Accompanied by faculty members, the students delved into the world of health care policy and legislation, realizing the significant role nurses play in shaping the future of health care in New Mexico. April Tafoya, DNP, RN, NC-BC, BSN level one coordinator and College of Nursing lecturer, highlighted the enriching experience, stating, “so many health care professionals are all assembled in the capitol for a very stimulating setting. The students walked into a very advanced world where they sat alongside white coat doctors, learned about joining career advancing nursing groups and heard policy development.”

Barbara Damron, PhD, MSN, RN, FAAN, professor and senior advisor to the dean of the College of Nursing, emphasized the importance of legislative sessions in shaping health care policies, stating, “Nursing students attending these sessions are afforded a rare chance to witness the birth of change that will shape the future of health care in New Mexico.”

The students themselves shared their reflections on the experience. Camille Toya, a BSN student at UNM College of Nursing, expressed her newfound understanding of the legislative perspective of nursing, saying, “At the capitol I learned about the legislative perspective of nursing, like bills that support nursing schools and other nursing practices. Many professionals also spoke about various aspects developing in nursing practice to be aware of like AI technology and how to advocate for our patients alongside evolving health care technology.”

Timothy Cao, another BSN Nursing student, highlighted the unique relationship nurses have with their patients, stating, “Health care workers are all important. But I’ve realized that nurses develop strong relationships with their patients, which is a big part of full circle treatment and care.”

Julianna Wood, also a BSN Nursing student, acknowledged the trust placed in nurses and the responsibility that comes with the profession, noting, “Nursing seems to be the number one trusted profession and that comes with great honor. I learned that there is a grand amount of responsibility that makes the profession powerful and necessitates always learning the best practices and news.”

Kimberly Spray and Sandra Cardenas, both PhD students at UNM College of Nursing, shared their aspirations in improving nursing care on a global scale. Spray commented on the invaluable experience of witnessing legislation in action, while Cardenas expressed her appreciation for the impact of policy change and her desire to contribute to bettering the state.

Overall, the engagement of UNM nursing students in the legislative session underscores the importance of informed and proactive nurses in addressing the evolving health care challenges facing New Mexico. By actively participating in policy discussions, these students are not only enhancing their own education but also contributing to the well-being of the communities they serve.
