This position is part of the Horticulture department and reports to the Curator of Plants.

According to the job description, the Assistant Gardener/Miniature Railroad Exhibit Operator will be involved in various tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the miniature railroad exhibit. This includes the maintenance and repair of small mechanical trains and other equipment. The ideal candidate should have soldering and mechanical skills related to small engine maintenance and repair.

In addition to the duties related to the miniature railroad exhibit, the assistant gardener will also be responsible for participating in landscape maintenance activities. This includes tasks such as raking leaves, pruning trees and shrubs, weed abatement, and pond maintenance. The candidate will also be required to operate gardening and maintenance equipment and perform general grounds maintenance duties.

Applicants for this position must be 18 years or older and have experience in landscape maintenance or horticulture. Some mechanical experience is also preferred. The ability to perform basic gardening activities in variable outdoor conditions is a must, as the job requires repeated bending, kneeling, and lifting. Candidates should also be prepared for constant exposure to environmental conditions such as extreme heat, noise, dust, pollen, and insects.
