New Mexico State University will be showcasing the inspiring documentary "Madan Sara" in Las Cruces on February 15th. Directed by Etant Dupain, the film sheds light on the remarkable lives of Haitian women known as "madan sara," who play a vital role in Haiti's economy.

Despite facing immense hardships and social stigma, these women demonstrate the power of Black women in a global economy. They work tirelessly to buy, distribute, and sell essential items in markets throughout the country, providing for their families and striving to establish a better future for generations to come. Their efforts have made them a crucial part of Haitian culture and economy, all while overcoming a lack of investment, infrastructure, and state assistance.

The University Art Museum at NMSU will be hosting a free screening of "Madan Sara" on February 15th from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The screening will take place at Devasthali Hall, located at 1308 E. University Ave. Following the screening, director Etant Dupain and co-executive producer Lulaine Childs will participate in a question and answer session with the audience via Zoom.

"Madan Sara" gives voice to these resilient women as they directly address the audience and share their dreams for a better Haiti. The documentary has received acclaim worldwide, winning 14 awards from various film festivals, including the Berlin Indie Film Festival, Paris Play Film Festival, London International Monthly Film Festival, and the Harlem International Film Festival.

Etant Dupain, in addition to being a filmmaker, is a journalist and community organizer. He has worked as a producer for renowned media outlets such as Al Jazeera, TeleSur, BBC, CNN, Netflix, PBS, and Vice. Dupain also founded an alternative media project in Haiti, which enables citizen journalists to provide information in Haitian Creole about internally displaced people, aid accountability, and politics.

Lulaine Childs, the co-executive producer of the documentary, is the co-owner of Street Team Productions based in New York City. This company specializes in creating entertainment content for different platforms. Currently, Childs and his team are working on a documentary centered around the journey of the 1974 Haiti World Cup team titled "Haiti 1974."

The University Art Museum, open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., invites the public to attend this screening and engage in the Q&A session with the director and co-executive producer. For more information about upcoming events, visit the museum's website at https://uam.nmsu.edu/.
