In a joint operation conducted this week, the Albuquerque Police Department's (APD) Northeast Proactive Response Team and Organized Crime Unit partnered with agents from the Attorney General's Office to combat shoplifting in the Uptown and San Mateo Blvd/Cutler Ave. shopping districts. The operation resulted in 7 felony arrests, including a repeat offender who continues to violate her conditions of release.
APD officers worked closely with loss prevention staff from multiple businesses, maintaining constant and real-time communication during the operation. Undercover surveillance was conducted by detectives and agents in and around the targeted businesses, while uniformed officers remained on standby for apprehension.
"This is a great example of the partnerships APD has built to address crime that affects many members of the community," said Chief Harold Medina. "We will continue to look for opportunities to partner with our local, state, and federal partners to address crime in Albuquerque."
The operation led to the arrest and citation of several individuals involved in shoplifting and related crimes. Among the arrests were Marileysi Campos, who was charged with felony shoplifting amounting to $1,714.65, and Tya Whiteley, who was charged with felony shoplifting totaling $1,733.21. Marileysi Campos, a highly prolific shoplifter who repeatedly violates her conditions of release, is being held by the District Attorney's Office at the request of the Organized Crime Unit.
In addition to the arrests, one vehicle was seized, along with two cell phones and a shoplifting ledger, as part of a shoplifting case at Target. OCU detectives will be seeking search warrants in connection to these items.
The success of the operation highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and businesses in tackling retail theft. By working together, APD and its partners aim to create a safer environment for the community and deter criminal activities.
The efforts of APD's Proactive Response Team, Organized Crime Unit, and the Attorney General's Office demonstrate their commitment to addressing crime in Albuquerque. This operation serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies continue to prioritize the reduction of crime and the protection of the community.
The joint operation against shoplifting in the Uptown area sends a strong message to potential offenders that their illegal activities will not be tolerated. Through collaborative efforts and targeted enforcement, APD and its partners are determined to maintain the security and well-being of Albuquerque residents and businesses.
