UNM cancer center names its new associate director for training and education

University of New Mexico Health Sciences (UNMHS) has announced the appointment of Jennifer Gillette, Ph.D., as the associate director for training and education at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC). Gillette, currently a professor and senior director for research in the University of New Mexico (UNM) department of pathology, is expected to play a significant role in advancing cancer education and training initiatives at the center.

According to a press release by UNMHS, Gillette's ongoing research primarily focuses on hematopoietic stem cells and leukemic cell signaling within the bone marrow microenvironment. Her work particularly emphasizes the role of regulatory scaffold proteins. In addition to her research, Gillette holds a full membership at the UNMCCC. She has made substantial contributions as the faculty director for the flow cytometry shared resource and advisory committee member for various shared resources. Her academic credentials include a doctorate in cellular and developmental biology from the University of Colorado Health Science Center and a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health.

In her new position, Gillette will assume key roles, such as director of both the UNMHSC undergraduate pipeline network program and the UNM cancer post-baccalaureate research education program. Furthermore, she will chair the biomedical sciences graduate program admissions committee and serve as an advisory committee member for the cancer research training and education coordination core under Angela Wandinger-Ness, Ph.D. According to another press release by UNMHS, Wandinger-Ness, previously, held Gillette's current position. Their collaboration has resulted in successful cancer education initiatives like "University of New Mexico’s CURE for Cancer," which expands research and training opportunities for students across New Mexico.

UNMCCC holds a unique position in New Mexico as it is designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). As per information provided by its official website, it enjoys prestigious status being one among only 56 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country.
