Environment Department seeks input on strategic water supply

The New Mexico Environment Department has recently issued a Request for Information (RFI) regarding the strategic water supply. This action represents the initial phase in the development process of the strategic water supply, setting the groundwork for future actions and initiatives.

According to a press release by the New Mexico Environment Department, this initiative aims to provide an alternative water source for water-intensive processes, thus supporting the transition to renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. With an investment of $500 million, New Mexico plans to purchase treated brackish and produced water through contracts. The state will use an advanced market commitment model to stimulate infrastructure development. The treated water will be used for various purposes such as creating green hydrogen, storing energy, and manufacturing electric vehicles, aligning with the department's mission to protect the environment.

Environment Cabinet Secretary James Kenney stated, "This game-changing water initiative is essential to fueling the next generation of New Mexico’s clean jobs, growing our economy, and conserving our freshwater sources." He further added that "New Mexico is meeting the urgency of the moment with this innovative climate and economic solution."

The New Mexico Environment Department is actively seeking technical and economic insights on brackish water and produced water through an RFI that remains open until March 31, 2024. Following this period, according to another press release by the department, there are plans to release a request for proposals and project-specific concept papers in summer 2024. An announcement is anticipated in summer 2024 with submissions due in fall 2024.

According to information available on its webpage provided by the state of New Mexico, The New Mexico Environment Department is committed to protecting and restoring the environment for present and future generations' well-being. It employs innovative engineering solutions, ensures compliance with state regulations, and holds polluters accountable for a fair and sustainable New Mexico.
