Sandia National Laboratories has announced that one of its engineers, Anthony Louis Garcia, has been awarded the 2023 Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers STAR of Today award for technical achievement. This esteemed accolade, which acknowledges exceptional performance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), underscores Garcia's contributions to his profession and his significant work in research and community outreach.
Since 2007, Garcia has played a pivotal role in the development of concepts, technological advancements, and solutions for national security challenges at Sandia National Laboratories. His responsibilities include creating test plans and project proposals as well as optimizing manufacturing processes. According to a press release by Sandia National Laboratories, Garcia is also actively involved in STEM outreach initiatives. He develops demonstrations for at-risk teenagers, leads STEM activities for elementary students, and participates in mentoring groups and community programs.
In response to the recognition, Garcia stated: "This is a really big deal for me," according to a press release by Sandia National Laboratories. "I strive to make a difference in my career and life while not standing out, so receiving this award feels both exciting and a little awkward. But I share this recognition with my colleagues because we’ve accomplished something together, which makes it even more meaningful."
Discussing his experience at Sandia National Laboratories, Garcia said: "It was a great fit," according to the same press release. "This was a place I wanted to be. I love being a part of an effort to keep the world safe."
