Bernalillo County updates 2024 capital improvement program website

Bernalillo County has recently unveiled its revamped website, providing a detailed overview of the county's capital improvement program and capital outlay requests. The website includes background information and project summaries, serving as an exhaustive guide to all capital outlay requests scheduled for presentation in the 2024 legislative session.

The capital improvement program is instrumental in aligning public needs and vision with Bernalillo County's capital expenditure budgets. This program covers capital outlay, general obligation bonds, and support for nonprofit services and organizations. According to a press release by Bernalillo County, the 2024 New Mexico Legislative Session is set to take place from Jan. 16 to Feb. 15.

Kathy Korte, chief of government affairs, said in a press release by Bernalillo County, "The identification of capital projects is a continuous process that identifies a wide range of needs, such as roads, infrastructure, public parks, and public safety." She further added that "All of our priorities seek to improve the quality of life of BernCo residents, and it is our hope that this information resource will assist all interested parties in understanding what Bernalillo County is requesting to improve the community."

Capital outlay grants are a significant source of revenue for Bernalillo County's capital projects. These grants are obtained from the state of New Mexico. The county uses these grants to secure additional funding from general obligation (GO) bonds and federal transportation grants. GO bonds provide another revenue stream for capital projects. Bernalillo County employs them to supplement funding from the state of New Mexico's capital outlay grants and federal transportation grants. In addition to this, the county actively supports local nonprofit organizations seeking capital outlay funding from the state. Through an annual request for proposal process, these organizations propose projects that align with their service needs across eight categories, emphasizing the purchase of various necessary capitals for service provision according to the Capital Improvement Program webpage provided by Bernalillo County.
