Society of Women Engineers honors Sandia employees

Sandia National Laboratories recently announced that several of its women engineers have been recognized by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). The SWE's awards program acknowledges outstanding achievements in engineering, engineering technology, or science related to engineering among individuals who identify as women and allies.

Among the honorees is Leslie Phinney, manager of Sandia National Laboratories' Thermal Sciences and Engineering Department. Phinney received the 2023 Advocating Women in Engineering award from SWE. Additionally, Emily Schrock was honored as a 2023 Distinguished New Engineer by the same organization. Other professionals recognized by SWE include Laura Biedermann, Suma Cardwell, Gabriella Dalton, Katharine Harrison, Nadine Miner, Stacy Nelson, Karla Reyes, Dorina Sava Gallis, Heidi Smartt, and Erika Vreeland. Each of these individuals has contributed groundbreaking work in various fields within research and development at Sandia National Laboratories.

According to a press release by Sandia National Laboratories, Phinney stated: "I arrived at Sandia in 2003 as an experimentalist qualitatively examining laser interactions and the heating of polycrystalline silicon microdevices. Over the years, that work progressed into developing modeling and computations for improved diagnostic techniques to quantify the temperatures of the materials. Now I’m a manager."

In another press release by Sandia National Laboratories, Schrock expressed her experience at Sandia: "I’ve been able to do some very cool things here at Sandia. What I really like is building and then field-testing system hardware. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed being able to test our design work and experience its success in the field."

SWE is dedicated to empowering women in engineering and technology careers. It promotes a positive perception of these professions while emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusion. According to its About webpage, SWE remains committed to supporting the success of its members while adapting to the evolving landscape of engineering and technology specialties.
