The University of New Mexico (UNM) recently held a ceremony in Ballroom B at the Student Union Building to honor the 2023 recipients of the Gerald W. May Outstanding Staff Award. The honorees, who received a cash prize and a commemorative plaque, were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the university.
Among the recipients were Anthony Gravagne, who has provided over 17 years of crucial support to physics and astronomy; Brian Kimura, an IT Officer in the College of Fine Arts instrumental in shaping UNM's workstation standards; Nick Royle, manager of Special Activities, whose decade-long tenure at UNM is complemented by his military background; Theresa Sherman, an HR consultant with two decades of experience advancing higher education in New Mexico; and Deborah Trevino, senior communications and marketing manager at Project ECHO with a background in global corporate communications. This information was released in a press statement by UNM.
UNM President Garnett S. Stokes expressed her gratitude during the ceremony: "Each year, I have the privilege of helping to present this award, one of our most prestigious awards at The University of New Mexico—and, with each passing year, one that has been presented the longest, without a pause or hiatus. Even the pandemic didn’t stop us from acknowledging the achievements of some of our most remarkable staff," said Stokes. "I thank all of you here today for your service to the University of New Mexico—and to our awardees, I’m very grateful to be a part of your celebration."
The Gerald W. May Outstanding Staff Award was established in 1990 by then-President Gerald W. May as a way to recognize exceptional staff achievements. Managed by the staff council, these funds are intended to commend individuals making significant contributions to UNM. Departments can also collectively nominate a staff member for recognition. Nominations are solicited each fall from within the university community and at least three awards are given out annually, as stated on the Gerald W. May Outstanding Staff Award webpage provided by UNM.
