NMSU joins national effort to boost women of color in tech education and careers

New Mexico State University (NMSU) has recently declared its involvement in the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's newly formed Action Collaborative on Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech. This joint initiative aims to provide evidence-based insights and recommendations to enhance the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women of color in the tech industry. It will follow the guidelines set out in the National Academies' report titled "Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech."

Joining this initiative alongside 34 other institutions across the nation, NMSU seeks to bolster educational pathways and workforce participation in the tech industry for women identifying as African American, Black, Hispanic, Latina, Native American, Asian American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. This information comes from a recent press release issued by NMSU.

Enrico Pontelli, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Regents Professor of Computer Science at NMSU stated in a press release by NMSU: "Innovation in the tech and computing domains, especially with the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence, demands equitable representation and inclusion of all voices." He continued: "Our institution has invested almost two decades of efforts in exploring how to improve participation of women in computing – this is something we deeply believe in and we are committed to make a difference. We are proud of the opportunity offered by the National Academies and we believe NMSU has an important role to play in this initiative."

Pontelli further added: "There are many studies that show that diverse working teams are more efficient and produce more effective solutions and designs. Right now, we are missing half of the potential talent."

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are private nonprofit institutions that offer impartial expert advice to shape evidence-based policies, drive innovation and address crucial societal issues. They primarily fulfill this commitment through their seven major program areas, as per the About webpage provided by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
