Bernalillo County unveils collaborative litter cleanup initiative

Bernalillo County has launched a cooperative initiative to tackle litter along Central Avenue, spanning from 114th Street to 131st Street. The initiative involves the county's planning and development services, land management, and the county treasurer’s office, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The planning & development services department coordinates monthly staff cleanups as part of this ongoing effort.

On December 13, a collaborative effort successfully removed 4.8 tons of waste from the designated area. The collected waste included items such as sofas, mattresses, vehicle components, clothes, and beverage containers. This ongoing effort was initiated in 2021 and has proven consistently effective in managing and clearing debris, according to a press release by Bernalillo County.

""These monthly cleanup events remind us about why we work for local government, to help make our communities better. Picking up litter and trash improperly discarded in our community is one of the ways we can make an immediate impact. Additionally, working with our government partners helps build collaboration and these events build trust with the public that we serve. We’re thankful to all who participated, and we look forward to expanding the circle of those we can get involved," says Planning and Development Services Director Nick Hamm," according to a press release by Bernalillo County.

The Illegal Dumping Partnership (IDP) is a task force established to address and reduce illegal dumping across Bernalillo County. The mission of IDP includes monitoring pollution, measuring progress, engaging the community and educating them about behavior change, and utilizing resources to minimize illegal dumping, according to information on the IDP website.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) prioritizes transit systems including railroads, aviation routes, and highways with a focus on traffic safety measures, environmental excellence standards and comprehensive planning strategies. NMDOT is committed to providing a safe, reliable transportation system that promotes economic development while preserving New Mexico's environment, according to the About webpage provided by NMDOT.
