Two salmonella cases identified by NMDOH connected to nationwide outbreak in cantaloupes

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has announced the identification of two patients in the state who have contracted Salmonella, linked to the current nationwide outbreak associated with cantaloupes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall specifically targeting Malichita and Rudy brand whole cantaloupes marked with the sticker number 4050.

The nationwide cantaloupe outbreak has affected 38 states, resulting in 230 cases, 96 hospitalizations, and three fatalities. Higher risks are observed in individuals aged 65 and older, children under five years old, and those with weakened immune systems. Notably, 24 individuals in this outbreak were in long-term care, and 23 children attended childcare centers before falling ill. Various products with pre-cut cantaloupe from Malichita and Rudy, within specific date ranges, are subject to recall. These include items from Kwik Trip, TGD Cuts, Freshness Guaranteed, RaceTrac, Vinyard, Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, Cut Fruit Express, ALDI, and Bix Produce. To prevent Salmonella infection it is advised to practice proper hand hygiene, avoid food cross-contamination and seek medical attention for symptoms like prolonged diarrhea, fever, bloody diarrhea vomiting or signs of dehydration according to a press release by NMDOH.

"Since New Mexico has two people infected with the ongoing nationwide cantaloupe-related Salmonella bacteria outbreak," said Chad Smelser M.D., Deputy State Epidemiologist according to a press release by DOH "NMDOH urges the public to check all cantaloupe in your possession both whole and pre-cut to make sure your fruit is not among those recalled. If you aren’t sure throw your cantaloupe away." Smelser added that "By following our guidance we can prevent further cantaloupe-associated Salmonella infections in our state."
