Los Alamos Lab 2023 medal winners

Los Alamos National Laboratory announced the recipients of its most esteemed medals in Community Relations, Operations, and Global Security for the year 2023. This group of winners is being recognized for their contributions to the laboratory's mission and impact in these areas.

Barbara Lynn and Ralph Martinez, recipients of the Community Relations Medal, are recognized for their exceptional efforts in creating inclusive communities and addressing societal challenges. Lynn, acclaimed across Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, and New Mexico, is celebrated for her work in building supportive environments, especially in STEM fields. Martinez has played a pivotal role in establishing vital nonprofit facilities in Española after overcoming personal struggles. His facilities address homelessness and recovery housing needs, reflecting his dedication to community welfare, said Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Ricardo Martí-Arbona, a research and development manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory is acknowledged for his leadership in reshaping operational strategies supporting the Lab's initiative for net-zero carbon output as stated by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Juan Duque and Kevin Mitchell have significantly advanced the Laboratory's capabilities in remote sensing winning them the Global Security Medal. Duque leads the Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy Remote Sensing team focused on detecting signatures of weapons of mass destruction. Meanwhile, Mitchell has demonstrated leadership applying machine learning to remote sensing data enhancing the Laboratory's expertise in global security according to Los Alamos National Laboratory.

"These medals are the Laboratory’s highest honor," said Laboratory Director Thom Mason. "They recognize each person’s dedication and contributions, representing broad scope of work done across the laboratory according to Los Alamos National Laboratory who also added that he commends the winners on their hard work making both lab and their communities a better place."
